The Opportunity
- This project was part of a larger program to strengthen the management and leadership capabilities within the country’s college leaders.
- To leverage education to strengthen the country’s economy, providing skills and jobs for youth, and increasing access to college education.
Our Approach
- Provided technical assistance to VLCC developing curriculum for a food technology program in post-harvest production.
- Introduced new approaches to developing and delivering an exemplary Food Technology program integrated with employer needs and specific skill competencies.
- Developed faculty and learning resources in the areas of both technical and pedagogical skills using a learner-centered approach. Instructors were able to provide training on competencies and skills that support the development of student-centred learning and employer-based competencies.
- Trained instructors who are industry-experienced using learner-centred training methodologies.
- Created management and college wide policies, systems, and practices covering areas that include:

- Supported VLCC’s Student Services and Marketing and Recruitment as part of a leadership program and business sustainability strategy modeled after NC’s best practices.
- Developed and offered management and faculty workshops in Vietnam and Canada
Partner Outcomes and Success
- A new and revitalized Food Technology program was developed using Developing a Curriculum (DACUM), competency-based learning outcomes and student-centered learning and teaching techniques.
- This approach was applied to additional programs at VLCC.
- Faculty and management acquired skills to develop programs based on labour market need and employer input, including the establishment of Program Advisory Committees
- Teacher training included the process of program development, curriculum development, student-centered teaching, teaching, and program evaluation
- Food technology equipment was identified, and new laboratories were supplied with technology to support the applied skills development in the Food Technology program.
- Management skills were developed through utilizing the competencies identified in the national Training Centres for Advanced Management (TCAM) program as part of the Vocational Skills for Employment (VSEP) project.
- An innovation centre was established to provide new entrepreneurial and applied research approaches for VLCC based on the Niagara College “Learning Enterprises” model.
